Colourful Festivals of the Miao People


This tour takes you to the southeast part of Guizhou and onto Guilin in Guangxi. You can visit different ethnic groups such as the Gejia, Miao, Dong, Yao and Zhuang, seeing the different landscape along the way and attending the different festivals of the Miao on each departure. 

 


Itinerary

Day 1, Arrive in Guiyang.

Day 2, Day trip to the Huangguoshu Waterfalls and the Dragon Palace with a boat ride in karst caves.

Day 3, Drive to Kaili, visit Kaili Museum to learn about the ethnic tribes in the area, visit a local market in Kaili.

Days 4 & 5, Attend different festivals on different departures.

Day 6, Visit Xijiang, the biggest Miao village in  Guizhou.

Day 7, Drive to Rongjiang with visits to Chejiang Dong villages

Day 8, Drive to Zhaoxin via Congjiang to visit Basha Miao village.

Day 9, Explore the area of Zhaoxin and join the Dongs for  a dance in the evening.

Day 10, Drive to Longsheng with visits to the Dong villages of Diping and Chengyang, and their Wind-and-Rain Bridges on the way.

Day 11, Drive to Guilin with a visit to paddy terraces reputed as the “Dragon’s Backbone”.

Day 12, Boat trip on the Li River to Yangshou and visit local markets.

Day 13, Explore the area to the Moon Hill, the Yulong Bridge, Fuli and Xinping.  A hotel rest ends the tour.

Lusheng Festival in Zhouxi

The festival takes place on the 19th – 20th of the 1st lunar month in Zhouxi near Kaili. During the festival, local Miao villagers gather together and dance in the finest outfits in the village square. These outfits can be so complicated to dress and undress that the girls’ mothers are always in attendance to lend a hand. People dance in circles, while in the middle folk musicians play the Lusheng instruments. As the girls dance in the square, the men watch buffalos fighting in the fields.

Sisters’ Rice Festival in Shidong

This festival originates from a tale of a lonely beautiful mountain girl and her friends’ assistance to look for a boyfriend for her. The festival takes place on a riverbank near the village of Shidong on the 14th to 17th of the 3rd Lunar Mouth. Festival activities include eating sisters’ rice, visiting friends, singing, dancing and boat racing.

Dragon Boat Festival

Falling on the 25th of the 5th Lunar Month, this festival is celebrated for three days in Shidong, Guizhou. Men organize boat racing in teams and women dance in circles along the river bank to celebrate this festival.

Lusheng Festival in Gulong

This three-day festival falls on 27th of the 9th lunar month in Gulong village near Kaili. During the festival, similar activities as the festival in Zhouxi.

New Year of the Miao in Leishan

New Year of the Miao is celebrated for one week starts on Nov.10th.  During celebration, people gather together in their best outfits to sing and dance, visit each other and enjoy delicious food. This is the most important festival of Miao, tens of thousands of people will attend.
